I am just finishing a thesis on leadership of large-scale social change. One of the people referenced several times and who has been an inspiration throughout is Nelson Mandela. I am so saddened at his passing though he deserves the rest he has now found.
Mandela embodied much that I admire in someone who engages in leadership: he was courageous, visionary, humble, and forgiving. He gave himself over to a cause bigger than himself. He was not afraid to act. He had the conviction that non-violence could prevail over injustice. In doing so, he grew. As someone on NPR said this evening, we who have shared in his time on Earth have been truly fortunate. Indeed, we have.
